Facing Mortality

1.0 Continuing Education Credit Hour

(Note: We strongly recommend you complete this module first.) Before one can safely and competently render end of life care to others it is crucial to come to terms with one's own mortality. In facing our own mortality we are compelled to deliver care that is free, as much as possible, from our own fearfulness and blind spots. This module provides an opportunity to confront your own apprehensions about end of life issues. It will provide insight into the many choices and decisions that influence quality of life at end of life and make the difference between what might be a necessarily sad experience and one that is a bad experience.

Objectives

  1. List major social/cultural factors that influence attitudes toward death.
  2. Identify for yourself the primary messages about death that you received from your own family.
  3. Identify societal barriers and personal roadblocks that obstruct a more meaningful approach to death.
  4. Describe ways in which values and attitudes affect your current behavior regarding how you care for the dying.
  5. Resolve the Facing Mortality case study.

Online Module

When completing the on-line module you will be presented with learning objectives, brief cases, questions for reflection (not scored), and interactive lessons with hyperlinks to engage you along the way. Once you complete the lessons, you will be presented with the Post Test (which requires a score of 100%) and then the Module Evaluation, followed by the opportunity to print your Continuing Education Certificate. Modules remain available for your future reference once you have completed them.
